Many who watched the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale starring Daniel Craig have since dreamed of going to Venice. Many outdoor scenes were filmed in Venice after the high-stakes poker game at Casino Royale in Montenegro. It is on the romantic canals of Venice that Agent 007 has brought the new love of his life, Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). This is also where she died at the end of the film, leaving Bond heartbroken.
So where was the movie shot in real life and can the locations be visited in Venice? Venice is a wonderful city to visit – even when it rains. It is a city like no other in Europe and without a doubt one of the most romantic cities in Europe – perhaps even more so than Paris.
Visit filming locations in Venice
You can visit all outdoor locations visited by Bond in Venice. During the 30 minutes of the film which takes place in Venice, we can retrace the steps and see firsthand what these places look like in reality.
- St. Mark’s Basin: Where James Bond arrives in Venice on a sailboat (see the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in the background)
- Accademia and Rialto Fish Market: Seen as Bond continues to sail to Venice
- Piazza San Marco: Seen as James Bond and Vesper leave the hotel as she says she has to go to the bank
- Sotoportego of the Column: Where Bond follows Vesper
- Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music: Vesper and Mr. Gettler meet in the courtyard of this famous building
The Rialto Fish Market is one of Venice’s must-see attractions. You should aim to visit in the morning when it’s alive and full of people buying and selling fish (as well as vegetables and fruit). In the afternoon, the market is filled and finished with only the lingering smell of fish.
- Open: Every day from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Piazza San Marco is perhaps the main central attraction in Venice. It is the main piazza or plaza and is surrounded by some of Venice’s most iconic architecture. Everyone who visits Venice also visits St. Mark’s Square.
The hotel at Casino Royale
The film was shot in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Venice and the United Kingdom (interior sets were at Barrandov and Pinewood studios). If one wishes to see the magnificent hotel where Bond stays in Venice, one will be a little disappointed.
There was a scene in the film of the Hotel Cipriani in Venice. The team took over the hotel restaurant to film the scene. In fact, the cast and crew stayed at this hotel while filming in Venice.
- Hotel Cipriani: The Hotel de Venise briefly appeared in the film
But apart from that, you will have to go to the Czech Republic to see the superb hotels in the film. The Hotel de Venise lobby is not in Venice at all but was filmed in the Narodní MuzeumPrague Natural History Museum.
- Lobby of the hotel “Venice”: Actually filmed at the Národní Muzeum in Prague
As for the Hotel Splendide seen in the film while Bond was in Montenegro, it is also in the Czech Republic and is the Grandhotel Pupp in the city of Karlovy Vary.
Honorable Mention – The Rialto Bridge
One of Venice’s top attractions is the Rialto Bridge – it’s a must-see attraction whether or not it appeared in Casino Royale. The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges that span the Grand Canal in Venice in the heart of the island. It’s only about a 15 minute walk to Piazza San Marco.
- Crosses: The Grand Canal Of Venice
The Rialto Bridge has been rebuilt several times since it was first built in 1173 and is one of the main Instagram spots in Venice. The current bridge was built in stone between 1588 and 1591 by Antonio da Ponte
You have to come back to the bridge at different times to see how the colors and moods of the canals change with the sun.
- Location : For the water elemental attack in Spider-Man: Far From Home
It was also the filming location for the 2019 Marvel movie Spider-Man: Far From Home. A number of Venice’s famous landmarks appear in both films. The Rialto Bridge features prominently in Spider-Man as the location where the water elemental attacks and Parker is thrown against the bridge.
