TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, ensured sufficient fish stock to meet demand during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the holy day of Eid al-Fitri 1443 Hijri.
“The demand for fish during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr is estimated at 2.64 million tons, while the fish stock from April to May 2022 is estimated at 2.99 million tons, taking into account the fishermen’s fishing pattern and the state of aquaculture seasons,” the minister said. during a joint working meeting with Committee IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives here on Wednesday.
The fish stock should be sufficient to meet community needs during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, he added.
Fish availability ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr has been sufficient for the past three years, he noted.
Meanwhile, the average price of fish in several major cities is expected to increase by 5-10% during the first week of Ramadan.
Trenggono said this will be due to an increase in demand for fish and the usual reluctance of fishermen to venture out to sea at the start of the holy month.
“However, the price will become stable during the second week of the month until the day of Eid al-Fitr. Moreover, the demand will decrease during the holy day and stabilize on the third day after the holy day,” said he predicted.
Demand is expected to increase further on the seventh day after Eid al-Fitr, he added.
Fish products offer a variety of choices and competitive prices ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr compared to other protein source products, such as eggs and chicken meat, the minister noted. .
“Furthermore, fish contains a high amount of omega 3s,” he added.
The ministry will prepare fish frozen warehouse and aquaculture production stocks to maintain supply and price stability.
The holy month of Ramadan 1443 Hijri is expected to fall in early April 2022, as the Ministry of Religious Affairs is to hold a meeting to determine the first day of the month on April 1, 2022.
