Razzaque predicts a possible surplus of fish, meat and eggs “in 3 to 5 years”

Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque said Bangladesh will have excess production of fish, eggs, meat and milk within the next 3-5 years.

He said: “One of the main challenges of the current government is to ensure nutritious food for all. We recognize that the fishing and livestock sector can play a vital role in this regard.

“We are gradually becoming self-sufficient in food for the measures taken by the government in recent years. Not only that, if we keep up the good work, we could have excess productions of fish, milk, meat and eggs in the next 3 to 5 years “, hoped the minister.

He made the remarks as he spoke as the main guest at a virtual panel discussion hosted by the Bangabandhu Veterinary Council on the occasion of World Veterinary Day 2021 on Saturday.

Speaking to vets, the agriculture minister said the sector needs to be pushed further through technological expansion and entrepreneurship. He also advised them to work hard to ensure healthy and nutritious food for all.

Dr Razzaque added that in order to ensure nutritious food, people’s incomes must be increased and jobs must be created. Otherwise, even if enough food is produced, people will not be able to buy and enjoy it.

The Minister also underlined the importance of agriculture in poverty reduction during the event.

“The government is working tirelessly to reduce the poverty rate to 12% and the extreme poverty rate to 5% … The fishing and livestock sector can play a huge role in this,” he said. he concludes.
