WASHINGTON, May 22, 2021 – Otten’s Seafood Inc., a Tinley Park, Illinois facility, is recalling approximately 46,804 pounds of Siluriformes fish (catfish) because the products were manufactured, packaged and distributed without the benefit of federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The fresh and frozen catfish items were produced from January 25, 2021 through May 21, 2021. The following products are being recalled: [View Labels (PDF Only)]
- 30 pounds. plastic bags and cardboard boxes containing “IQF Frozen Catfish Steaks Net Wt 30.00 LB” and have a shelf life of one year.
- 30 pounds. plastic bags and cardboard boxes containing “40+ Oz Fresh Catfish Whole Net Weight 30.00 LB” and have a shelf life of one week if not frozen.
These items were shipped to wholesale and retail outlets in Illinois and Indiana.
The issue was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance activities when it was determined that the catfish products did not bear the USDA inspection mark and were produced in a facility that was not USDA inspected.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse effects due to the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are asked not to consume them. These products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS regularly conducts recall effectiveness checks to ensure that recalling companies are notifying their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers.
