Colemak

11 days ago, on Jan. 19, 2009, I made the switch to the Colemak keyboard layout. I had actually made the decision at about 0:00 that morning, and had spent a good couple hours before sleep (my tendency is to decide to do rather nerdy, pointless things, like install Linux on something or switch keyboard layouts, very late on Sunday nights; mostly, I imagine, to avoid impending work) setting things up, and starting on typing exercises.

Some time ago, when I was still in high school, I had tried to switch to the venerable and beloved Dvorak layout. I don’t remember how long I lasted but my memory feels like about 2 weeks. Starting out I was, of course, terribly slow and I had no patience to suck for a month so the whole thing was rather hopeless.

But time moves inexorably forward and just as my subsequent adoption of OS X didn’t prevent me from periodically wondering if I should maybe install Ubuntu/Fedora/Arch/Zeta on whatever I’ve got lying around (answer: no, not particularly), so too did I that night find myself idly wondering about Colemak.

Falta envido

Falta envido is like a weapon whose size decreases as the game proceeds. In the beginning, when both of you are young and small, it is like a man’s sword wielded by a child: massive, clumsy, and audacious; but sometimes audacity reaps great rewards. If your opponent outstrips you and becomes the leader, falta envido will quickly grow tiny and comical in your hand; to strike at a king, after all, demands strength and considerable bravado. But if the luck comes to you that you should grow stronger at your opponent’s expense, then the falta will become like a good dagger—elegant, efficient, and if wielded with cunning, the most appropriate way to guide a final killing blow unerringly under the rib.

More on Christmas

In the Jesus-Hell-It’s-Over Department, Derek Powazek gave a brief run-down last week of the whole Christmas Thing. A good bite-sized expression of doubt with the whole ‘But Christmas is totally a secular holiday, why are you getting so agitated?’ line.

But every December it still pisses me off. And eventually I hit a breaking point and need to have a good rant. And here we are.

Only difference is, if it was Satan instead of Jesus, I’d be pretty stoked.
